Rowfant Explorers Lay A Geocache!
Rowfant
Explorers have recently taken part in geocaching after winning two GPS
units. Geocaching
(pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure.
A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using
GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online.
Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache. More
information can be found at
www.geocaching.com
After an evening learning to use the GPS units and finding out about the
sport of geocaching, the Explorers decided that they wanted to lay a Unit
Cache. In the logbook each member wrote a few lines about themselves and
what scouting means to them. Rob and Tom then hid the cache, ready for
people to find it. As a test, the Explorers will also be finding it in the
near future. Since laying, there have been 4 visits, two of which are people
also involved with Scouting!
A Travel Bug (a tag
with a unique number, so that it can be tracked) has been fixed to a unit
Necker in the hope that fellow geocachers will pick it up and move it from
cache to cache. The Unit can then see where the necker travels using the
unique number on the geocaching website. Currently, it has been taken from
the Rowfant Cache and is in transit to a new cache. We are looking forward
to watching its progress!
